November Client of the Month Marci Watson

Marci Watson has been coming to Studio 54 Pilates & More for more than four years. She originally came into the studio because she was scheduled for back surgery and wanted to have a plan for her future health and to make sure she would never have to have back surgery again.

She has participated in private and group classes in Pilates and THE GYROTONIC® Expansion System and continues to inspire us with her progress!

Why Pilates can be the Perfect Exercise if you have Scoliosis.

If you are one of the many people with scoliosis, you know that not all exercises are equal for strengthening, stretching and balancing your body. Depending on the severity of your scoliosis you probably figured out at an early age that many traditional exercises and sports just plain do not feel good in your body.

If no one ever explained to you why this is, you may have even learned to dislike exercise and movement because of your bad experiences. Movement and exercise are supposed to help you feel better, stronger and move easier. Unfortunately for those with scoliosis this is not always the case. Your curve and twist in your spine can make certain movements painful and even impossible. And many movements can create more imbalance in your body and cause pain.

How do I know if I'm doing the Pilates exercises correctly?

If you’ve ever taken a Pilates class, you know there is a lot of attention to detail with the Pilates exercises. Pull your belly in, keep your shoulders down, engage your inner thighs,....breathe! Pilates instructors are notorious for giving lots of corrections and sometimes it can be confusing as a client. You want to be doing it correctly, right?

Your instructor’s corrections and cues are meant to help you fine tune your own practice, stay safe and get the most out of each exercise. Sometimes—especially if you are just starting off—the helpful advice can be a little overwhelming.
